Missing world - modded game
Hello fellow citizens of the 10th realm!
I started a new vanilla world last night and played for about 6 hours. Tonight I've installed Thunderstore Mod Manager as I've used it before on my old gaming PC. I used TMM to download Bepinex and a handful of mods. When launching the game (through TMM, not from Steam) I can't see the world I created last night. It only shows my old worlds that were in the old .db and .fwl file format.
Can anyone suggest what might have gone wrong or how I can resolve this? I'm happy to use another mod manager or even just install them manually if needs be. I don't want to start again with a new world though. Sunk too many hours into it for that.
SOLUTION - So it turns out that the June 2022 update for Valheim fixed an issue with Steam cloud syncing and part of that fix changed the save directory. Not sure if this new save directory only applies when you have cloud syncing enabled and it uses the old location if you disable it, or if this is just the new save directory for all saves. I found my missing save in C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\Userdata\\#number#\\892970\\remote. The #number# part is the numeric Account ID of your Steam account so if multiple Steam users login to your PC you'll have multiple folders there. 892970 is the Steam App ID for Valheim. Inside the "remote" folder are the Characters and Worlds folders. I copied my world save out of there and into C:\\Users\\USERNAME\\AppData\\LocalLow\\IronGate\\Valheim\\worlds and the game could then see it.
SOLUTION EDIT - I've disabled Steam cloud syncing as I didn't want it enabled anyway. I've now noticed that the world save files I copied into AppData\\LocalLow\\IronGate\\Valheim\\worlds are actually now being stored in AppData\\LocalLow\\IronGate\\Valheim\\worlds\_local so I assume this is the new save directory when not using Steam cloud sync.
