Deep North spawn rate question

Has anyone even SEEN a Barka lately? I haven't run into a single one since the latest update, and my Spirit Caller has been stuck at level 2. It's the last thing I've been wanting to upgrade before fighting the boss, but I'm short by 6 frozen branches. I've walked an entire large island with zero encounters.
