Looking for a good SIMPLE caramel recipe

I want to make caramel brownies (I have the brownie part under control) and the caramel recipes online mostly call for coconut oil and at the moment I only have basic ingredients. I found a recipe that calls for milk and butter and was wondering if anyone knew if it would work with vegan subs (like earth balance and silk).
