State income tax question re: telecommuting with out of state company

Hi. We live in Vermont. I work in VT. My wife has telecommuted for a MA company for about 15 years. I'm doing my taxes and trying out a different tax program than usual, but am running them both together ([1040.com](https://1040.com) vs. [Taxact.com](https://Taxact.com)). The two programs show approximately the same number owed for "total" tax amounts (state + Fed), but [1040.com](https://1040.com) shows we owe some of that "state" amount to MA. But again the total between the two state amounts equals what we thought we owed Vermont.

My question is, does some of our tax money actually go to Mass, when we pay it to Vermont? It looks like the answer is yes, but it's already happened behind the scenes, so to speak. It's just something I've never seen before.

I'm not worried about this finding, but am curious about it. Thanks for any insight people have.
