Need advise on pain management for glaucoma
My dog is almost 13 years and great shape, unfortunately last year in October his left eye was diagnosed with glaucoma. The disease had progressed enough he had lost vision in his left eye and was recommended to be removed. We were told that eventually the same thing was going to happen to his right. In November of 2021 his left eye was removed. His right has been treated 3 times a day with two different medications since last October to slow the progression.
At the end of June, I realized that by the end of august he would be turning blind and started the process to book the surgery. He has his eye removal surgery booked for august the 30th ( i was hoping for an earlier date- but I’m the cancellation list in case). Anyways his glaucoma has progressed to the point where he is completely blind in his remaining eye and we are having a hard time controlling the pressure and pain in his eye.
He is adapting pretty well to being blind, he plays with his toys and eats anything that his nose can find. In the last 2 days I’ve noticed he has been showing signs of pain ( trying to scratch his eye, breathing rapidly or panting and keeping his eye closed and sometimes wimping).
I got really worried about the discomfort he is having and last night because he looked really uncomfortable. I know that I pain is something hard to manage with pain killers. But I also know that glaucoma cause really bad headaches too.
Anyways, I got pretty freaked out and found a bottle of prescription pain medication he got for his last surgery and give him a dose. After 30min he immediately started relaxing and his breathing when back to normal.
The medication is meloxican for vet use.
Now im trying to book and appointment with my vet to see is pain management can be done until his surgery.
And im wondering if anyone else has experience with a dog that has or had glaucoma and if pain management was a good short term option until his surgery
