Low innovation in gaming these days

I know that part of this will be due to age. At age 35, I've been there, done that. Most games can't hold my interest because I've already played a game like it. Several times.

But that shouldn't be the case, right? I've noticed we're seeing a big lack of innovation in games. It's like a new game comes out, and they either didn't innovate at all, or they managed to slip in one interesting mechanic. But that's it.

Take all those tiled dungeon crawlers for instance. Where each press of the arrow key advances you by one tile. I can think of 10 things off the top of my head that would make those seem so much newer and nicer. But none of it ever appears in a game. It will just be the same old game we've had since... well for 30 or 40 years. Maybe it looks a little nicer now.

They don't even seem to do good "twists" anymore. For example, there used to be a thing gamers all knew about. Where a game would come out, and a different developer would say "Yeah great idea! But I have a really cool spin I'm going to put on that". A somewhat recent example might be Stardew Valley, and Graveyard keeper. Stardew Valley came out, and then later Graveyard Keeper came out with a darker theme and some other differences. But you don't see this very often anymore.

Is this just me and my old age? You have to wait ages (it seems like) for an interesting game to come out anymore. Feels like they're all somehow incomplete. Even the old types of games would be fine if they would add some new features. Instead of making clones.
