Looking for an good smaller HD camera (not HDV or AVC)...

A friend of mine in the market for a smaller camera to buy for a doc he's making. He checked out DSLRs, but hated the ergonomics. I urged him to get something that records to a flavor of HD better than HDV or AVC. I'm a little out of touch with the smaller cameras...anything popular out there?
