How to check part compatibility?

New to motorcycles. I've got a 1994 xv535 yamaha virago that needs a new wire harness. The shop tells me I need part no. 3JC-82590-20, which has been discontinued, so I'm hunting on ebay. I have two questions.

How can I tell if this part is compatible with my bike, before buying?

**Edit:** I should say that I've tried using this site to check part compatibility: www.megazip.net , but when I search for the part number, the site says this specific part only occurs in two 1994 xv535 viragos and nowhere else. There are even other 1994 xv535 viragos which use a different wire harness, part no. 3BT-82590-10-00. So it seems like I'm missing something.
