Apple Carplay Issues

Apple Carplay just constantly disconnects and I’m always fumbling around, plugging it in and unplugging it. So irritating. But I need it for navigation and music, and I would prefer not to mount my phone as I get distracted/I want to avoid tickets/safety. Does anyone have any tips on how to remedy this, or what they tried? Out of curiosity, is Android Auto any better?

For reference, I have an iphone 13 and 2018 Volt gen2
