Why is thrall considered green Jesus?

I'm up to date on the lore, but let's take it back to cata.

Even back then thrall was "green Jesus" and a bunch of yada yada.

In his final act he was the spear bearer, not the spear. He still only managed to wound Deathwing, with the heroes and the dragon aspects being the ones to finish him off.

Was the fan base just tired of thrall being so popular and having too much screen time?

Edit: thanks for the discussion guys I'm getting too distracted with these posts and I'm really enjoying it but I have to go food shopping and since I'm hyper I'll probably forget about this later.
