To confirm, can CloudFlare be my registrar with its nameservers while I host my site elsewhere?

It's been a while since I've had to mess with DNS so I just want to make sure I don't mess any of my websites up when I change registrars.

Currently, I have several domains with Google Domains and I'm looking to transfer them out. The domains I'm using are hosted with "Hosting Provider X." and uses nsx.HostingProviderX.com as the custom nameservers.

I was looking at CloudFlare but noticed that it said to be eligible, I have to be ok with using their nameservers.

Is it possible to have CloudFlare be my registrar and still have "Hosting Provider X" host my site? My understanding is that this can be done with an A record, is this right?

Or am I SOL if my domain's nameservers aren't nsx.HostingProviderX.com?
