Cake cutting

Excuse my ignorance here but How exactly do you make cake cutting an "event" of the wedding? None of the weddings I've been to have done it, but my friend who owns a bakery is making me a gorgeous cake and I want to feature it. I just am not sure.. how?

Do we like gather everyone make a slice in the cake and then hand it to the caterers? It doesn't really feel like a "moment" in my head. Can someone explain. What they've done?
