Experience Ordering and Returning Jewelry from Hushed Commotion
I couldn’t find any posts online about the reputability of this company before I ordered, so wanted to post my experience.
Some background: They are a small, female-owned special event jeweler that make each piece ordered from scratch. I love the unique designs, and ordered a sash for my wedding dress and earrings to complete the look.
Upon receiving my order, I thought the packaging was cute and festive, but the earrings and sash themselves were were not the quality I expected for the price (untrimmed extra felt, bent metal, beading coming loose). I had never seen an actual picture of the sash and the color wasn’t what I imagined. I immediately started searching for how to start a return.
They had sent the package the week of Thanksgiving while I was traveling and initially refused to accept a return, citing that it was past the 5 day return window. Mind you, I was within 5 business days, but they said that’s not how they operate. You have 5 days including weekends, so drop everything when their shipment comes in I guess. I don’t know the industry standard, but that seemed like an exceptionally small return window, especially for expensive special event items where you’re trying to craft a very specific look. You’re also unable to schedule a shipment or estimate when the package will come in when you order. If you’re not incredibly decisive or travel frequently, I’d hesitate ordering here.
They did finally agree that a national holiday should not be counted against the 5 day window, and that I could return non-clearance items. This kind of peeved me because a bead was already falling off the clearance item, I had never seen an actual photo before receiving it, and nowhere on my receipt or on the website was the sash listed as final sale. I wasn’t about to push my luck considering how inflexible they seem, and said okay so how do I return the other item.
They supposedly sent a return label to my email, but I didn’t receive it. I emailed them back and they asked that I check my spam, which I did even though I had no issue receiving any of their other messages. I had to ask twice more for them to send a return label, in the meantime worrying that they would renege on accepting my return and I’d be stuck with the earrings too.
Even once you do return the item, they don’t fully refund you. They take out a $20 fee to restock, which is pretty hefty for what I imagine amounts to throwing a pair of earrings into a drawer and updating your inventory system.
If I could walk into their store in NY I absolutely would shop with them again because the pieces they design are stunning. Unfortunately, I can’t and I’m not impressed with the online ordering and return process.
