[US] Used GTI or a new Elantra GT N-line?

Looking to buy a car after years of not having one. I want something practical but also something I could have some fun with. I take public transit to work so will be mainly driving on weekends. Will not be doing any after-market stuff.

Aiming around ~25k. My budget is flexible and is more a function of having a good value and not buying more than what I need. I could maybe stretch for a brand new GTI, I'd just feel a bit guilty doing it.

Buying used I feel like I'd save a lot on depreciation. Also if for some reason my situation changes, and I want a different car (or even no car at all since I live in a city with good public transit), I won't be losing much if I sell. But with used, there is no warranty and any repairs will be very expensive. What would you recommend?
