Organic Space Station Book

Okay, so from what I remember it was about humans going up into space and landing on an asteroid or something, they enter and find out it's a self sustaining colony of (possibly bug like?) aliens. Each has it's own purpose, very ant colony like with workers and a queen, and for the first time in a millennia it has required to create a super smart alien to talk with the humans.

Other bits of info I'm foggy on: I think there were two humans that were allowed "on board" a girl and a guy They may have eaten some glow moss and kept a log I think the super smart bug had to take over the girls mind or something, I just don't remember it ending well for her.

Somewhat old scifi book I read for a class about 3-4 years ago
