Shapeshifters from another dimension, MC must protect girl named Kali

I was certain the book was called "The Others" or " or sonething in that vein, but I keep getting that ghost movie as a result. It's a book from the 90s, the cover is mostly black but shows green/yellow leopard eyes.

- The book starts with a guy qho thought he was going to get 'lucky' being chased through the woods and killed by a black Big Cat, who is a shapeshifter.

- Main love interest to the cop/detective is a shapeshifter named Kali.

- I'm pretty sure there are some sex scenes

- The motivation of the bad shapeshifters is to go back to their home dimension through a portal in a cave but they need Kali to go with them so they are trying to capture her.
