Children’s/ YA(?) book abt a boy who throws eggs or rocks at a pigeon and ends up killing it?

I can’t give much info other than the cover may be red with a splattered egg on the cover? Or a pigeon? I think the boy is a bratty unlikable character? Not too sure what his motives were for killing the pigeon but I think it was accidental? Like he was aiming for the pigeon but didn’t mean to kill it?

Idk why it’s engrained in my head but I think this book introduced me to death as a kid which is why I need to find this book for some closure lol.
