Finish recommendation for a maple kitchen countertop

Hi All,

I'm building a kitchen counter top extension with a Cherry base and a soft maple top. I'm trying to decide between Danish oil and wiping varnish for the finish on the top. I'm going to use wiping varnish on the Cherry base, but I thought the oil might be good since the top will get dinged up a lot and the oil will let me easily repair damage. Does anyone have any thoughts?
