Real World Eastern Reactions to Fantasy Realm Portal Scenario
Howdy.
So, we all know the Gate concept. Fantasy portal, fantasy army attacks the modern world, yaddah yaddah yaddah.
That's not what I'm here to discuss.
So, to cut to the chase, I'm American. I have friends from other nations, of course, and I do try to do research when writing other nations in my works, but let's be honest, I'm no expert.
Now, I'm currently working on a somewhat similar concept to Gate (again), but a bit... Let's just say larger scale (because I don't have enough writing projects as it is).
This is going to be a bit of a vague post since I don't want to reveal *too* much of what I'm working on, but I'll give a few basic bits of info and then ask my question.
**Point 1: this isn't a hostile portal opening.**
This is effectively just various portals opening across the globe and into this fantasy world. There absolutely *are* hostile/evil/chaotic elements like in any fantasy world, but I'll leave those up to your imagination for the time being.
**Point 2: most of the portals are in the ocean (exact locations subject to change).**
As noted in the image I spent hours making on MS Paint, there are a few over land but not within any major cities. This is partly to facilitate logistics on our end, but also to make it a bit more difficult for the fantasy elements to easily stumble into the real world outside a few land portals. Some mages could teleport to these and cross that way, or if they're capable of scrying across and have the power, teleport that way.
The portals are massive.
One idea I like is that early signs of the portals forming is unknown bird species crossing over the land ones and maybe a few cargo ships briefly vanishing and then coming back around when they realized something is up and turn around.
**Point 3: This is the modern world, so there is a period of Quarantine so neither side immediately starts making deals right away.**
Basically, once the portals and their locations are fully discovered, besides a few scouting ops and brief first contacts, both worlds decide to wait either 30 or 60 days before opening up entirely. On our end, obvious concerns of magic plagues or side effects of a world with elements that violate the laws of physics as well as pretty clear worries from the UN and WHO about a mass scale repeat of the first contact between Europe and the New World IRL, where disease wiped out millions.
But also to give all factions a bit of time to better figure out their game plans so to speak...
And that's there my question comes in.
I already have a solid few ideas for the US storyline. Like, oh, pharmaceutical companies have a mini collective heart attack when they realize that healing magic makes 90% of their stuff worthless (or at least worth a lot less) and lobby congress for tons of regulations while oil companies immediately jump in to do their own thing, blah blah blah. Been there, you know the drill.
***But what would*** ***non-Western*** ***nations do here?***
Like, I can imagine China immediately working on contracts to help modernize the infrastructure for some of the kingdom's for a cheaper price, maybe even work on a fantasy version of their Belt and Road Initiative. Russia advertising kalashnikovs and drones to whoever coughs up the gold, smaller nations like Indonesia or Myanmar making deals with bigger nations to help with the logistics of establishing connections and routes between worlds... But that's all very, very, VERY surface level.
Local people's reactions, ongoing projects that might suddenly stop or get diverted or the reverse and jump in priority, particular interests that may not be common knowledge where I live, stuff like that.
So, yeah, if you guys have any insights or ideas for elements from nations not necessarily aligned with the West in this situation, be it a change in certain policies that may not be as well known outside of these nations IRL or benefits/downsides to suddenly having a whole other planet accessible, fantasy elements included, let me know.
And hey, if you can point me in the direction for reading more about your ideas, that'd also be great.
Again, I don't want to give too much away about what I'm working on, but I'll answer what questions I can about this fantasy world if it may matter to the national reaction.
Thoughts? Let me know.
