Tips on balancing realism with not wanting to depict something super immoral?
So I’ve been working on my first novel which deals with a drug addicted teenage guy who’s about 17-18 years old.
I plan on definitely orienting myself in my writing towards realism, so the realism genre. What aspects of addiction are actually realistic even if they’re grim or may not be what people think of when they hear about addiction.
The Story also involves him having a girlfriend at some point. So the way I’ve sketched their dynamic is that I wanted to try to make him still a good boyfriend despite his addictions and not be super toxic to her if that makes sense? It’s quite important to me, as a female writer who’s also been in a toxic relationship to not depict it like the drugs are an excuse for him to treat his girlfriend badly.
Obviously I’ve also done my research about addiction (Obv not done in that sense, still have to research a lot more)
Now the only thing that’s on my mind is whether or not I’m making him act “too perfect” or “too idealised” for someone who’s dealing with addiction. Although doesn’t this also reflect my own biases about addiction and contradict the point I’m trying to make that addiction by itself doesn’t make you a bad person? Obv he won’t always act perfectly in the relationship but like Idk it’s still something that goes through my head.
Maybe it’s just something I think about because I’ve started writing only recently…
Anyway does someone have advice for me on this?
