Protagonist's reaction to the death of a loved one?

I'm struggling with a death scene, where the main protagonist's mother has passed away. How do I make his reactions believable, without it being over the top? Does anyone have examples from a story they felt handled this kind of scene well? This is for a young adult novel, so examples in that genre would be extremely helpful.
