Why isn't my high fantasy novel selling?
I wrote an entire PERFECT world based around Aristotelian Physics, I had to cut 10,000 words to shorten my prologue chapter that introduces the world to just 25,000 words. Do you know how much history I had to gut out of this thing in order to get it here? AND NOW THE PEOPLE WON'T EVEN TAKE IT.
I have an original magic system, I have over 6,500 unique historical figures over 10 millenniums of history, there's everything found in Tolkien and MORE. The publicists all refused me but I knew they simply didn't understand what they were reading, the Silmarillion is a clear example that you can fill a book with hundreds of pages of literally just listing the names of Kings and Queens and you will have a hit.
SO WHY ISN'T MINE DOING THAT? I followed every worldbuilding principle, I made sure that the political system of the Qaenori Elves was based on the Roman Consular Republic, I made sure their dialects were properly evolved like a natural language would, I detailed the cotton flowers of the local region and how they influenced the cotton trade leading to the rise of wealthy plantation barons that influenced the consular elections leading to the 12th Klandekan War. AND ALL OF THIS IN JUST THE FIRST 200 PAGES.
Sure there may not be a single line of dialogue, or a narrative for anyone to follow, nor any proper characterisation for the reader to care about any one of these thousands of names and titles and people. BUT I WORLDBUILT SO WELL.
