Don't buy the JDM ambient lighting kit from SMY (H2017VC110)

**UPDATE**: SMY support sent some 3rd-party tubes that aren't quite as bright, but are much more consistent. Pics in comments.

**Original Post**: Saw some posts recently about interior ambient lighting and thought it would be a cool mod. Unfortunately, I had a pretty bad experience with it. SMY sells the JDM ambient kit. They include harnesses and you can get alternate LED colors from the default white. There's a bit of splicing to do to tap these into the footwell lighting kit (which is required from this mod), but it's not that difficult.

The problem is these shitty "light tubes". They snap into the dash and have a nice OEM fit, but the quality of the tubes is severely lacking. I noticed on unboxing that they were kind of inconsistent, but figured that wouldn't be an issue for an OEM kit, right? Wrong. Results in the first 2 pics. Massive disappointment for the \~$200 pricetag. These look cheap and uneven as hell.

Contacted SMY about it and at first it was "check your install, they might be dirty or misaligned". Okay, took em back out, wiped down, clipped back in, sent pics of everything. Still looks like ass. I sent plenty of pics of the tubes themselves. Pretty obvious inconsistencies IMO. Nope, they're "functioning as intended" and there's nothing SMY can or will do about this. They suggested going and sourcing light tubes on my own to try and get nice, even lighting. Cool, thanks for nothing. I was already kind of worrying that's what I'd have to do.

But yeah, just super disappointed with this and wanted to vent and warn anyone else who's thinking about getting this kit. You're better off spending way less on a generic ambient lighting kit. You can still tap that into the footwell light harness to keep the dimmer functionality if you want.
