Ultra Endurance Race Tips
Doing my first race longer than 4 hours this weekend, the Shenandoah Mountain 100. Training is done, bike is ready and currently testing my air mattresses for leaks before heading down after work tomorrow. I've mapped out my nutrition, preridden every section of the course and planned out where to put the drop bags (Aid 3 and 5). I've read past race reports and generally know what to expect.
But, there is always something to learn with races like this, and I'm sure everyone has their own tips and tricks to share. From mantras that get you through the false flat section 6 hours in, to a treat that you love in a drop bag, to a post race hack that will make life more comfortable while recapping your race with riding buddies.
Some of what I've heard. -Extra socks (dry feet can be a game changer) -Pack Candy, specifically Sour Patch Kids to switch sugar intake -Beer doesn't hurt in the last quarter (there is debate on this) -Hike in the pack early in the race (Lynn is list at 16+%) don't burn matches on steep stuff -Pickles from a sub shop and/or Ginger root for cramping
What does everyone else have?
