Flaky bank info: is this common?
This isn't exactly a YNAB thing, but I wouldn't have learned about it without YNAB's help, so... maybe this is kind of a rave for YNAB while it's also a rant about my bank.
**First, a bit about me and my YNAB use (skip this for the TL;DR version)**
I've been gung-ho into YNAB for seven solid months now. I even backtracked three months at the start, for several reasons: (a) to really get a grip on what my spending was like and help me set good targets, (b) to get all of 2024 into the records, and (c) to get practice categorizing transactions and give me a reason to have held onto so many receipts. (I've thought about going farther back, just two months anyways, because that's when I got my cat and it would be mildly interesting to know how much he has impacted my finances... but ehhh, effort, maybe I won't.) Oh, and (d) I'm a bit of a numbers geek, so I just *wanted to do this*.
I do manual entry for everything. This is partly because I like feeling closely connected with what my money is doing, partly because Canadian banks don't officially support third-party interactions yet, and partly because I don't see how auto-import would help with anything when it takes several days for credit card transactions to be posted/cleared anyways. I guess it's to watch for unauthorized transactions...? Eh, I reconcile often enough to catch those anyways, now that YNAB has me no longer afraid to face my finances.
I reconcile at least 2-3 times a week, usually daily, because it gives me a nice little dopamine boost to know that I'm keeping up on my financial life (and I love doing my little reconciliation dance to keep boosting that dopamine).
I occasionally (at least once or twice a month) drag and drop the file of downloaded transactions into YNAB, mostly to delight in all those delicious matched links reminding me how good I'm doing at entering things in. I suppose it also gives me extra peace of mind that I'm not missing anything.
Due to me doing so well with keeping up with those things, I've noticed two irksome things my bank does. At first I thought it might've been a fluke or two or five... but now I'm realizing these things seem to be happening uncomfortably often.
**Irk 1**
This one is relatively harmless, but annoying because it *seems* so *wrong*: my bank will clear some transactions for money coming into my account, even with the date on the transaction being *in the future*. This is not shown as a pending transaction or anything: it is literally *cleared*, and is included in my account balance.
It has happened before with government benefit deposits, always over a weekend. It just happened again today, for some bonus deposit interest on Monday November 4th (which is what sparked this post on Saturday November 2nd). Maybe it only happens with completely trustworthy deposits, like internal or governmental ones? I don't know.
It irks me because I wanted to reconcile the account, but in order to do this I had to put the *wrong* date on the transaction, and now unless I remember to change it back on Monday, my records won't match the bank's records. I know YNAB will match them just fine eventually, and there isn't exactly a *problem* here... I just don't really like incorrectness, especially when dealing with financial stuff.
Plus it was annoying that I actually went to the effort of downloading the transaction file today to save me from doing the manual entries, but then I had to manually enter them anyways because the download doesn't include Monday's transactions. Grrr!
**Irk 2**
The second problem is actually quite frightening, because it involves credit card transactions *disappearing* for a significant amount of time between seeing them Authorized (i.e. pending) and seeing them Posted (i.e. cleared). I'm talking a day or two, and *not* just on weekends. Also, I'm seeing this happening every week with several transactions, not just occasionally like Irk 1.
Sometimes I know *for certain* that I've seen the transactions in the Authorized section before they've vaporized, because I used the info from the Authorized section in order to enter them into YNAB. And then they're gone, no sign of them, sometimes for several days. I know this, because YNAB shows me the truth (praise be to YNAB!) while my bank seems to be playing dumb.
Sometimes I can't reconcile the credit card account unless I mark some of those missing transactions as cleared, even though they are in that invisible limbo between Authorized and Posted. It's like a game trying to guess which ones are cleared or not, but not a game I agreed to play! I feel like the only reason I'm winning it at all is because YNAB is helping me keep up with knowing about my transactions.
**Irk 3**
Okay there isn't really any specific third irk, but Irk 1 + Irk 2 = Thrice the irkiness!
I'm using one of the Big Banks in Canada, so I don't really think they have any excuse for this kind of behaviour. I was already thinking of leaving them, but the persistence of these irky behaviours are making me even more antsy to move.
**I'm wondering if this is something others notice at their banks too... or is it just my bank?**
I'd love to hear from others, especially Canadians because I need to know which banks to avoid. (Mine is a vote against RBC.)
